Shopify analytics without cookies: a privacy-first setup
Cookieless analytics on Shopify is possible, with one nuance at checkout. Here is how the storefront, the checkout, and the consent framework fit together.

The two tracking surfaces on Shopify
Shopify stores have two distinct tracking surfaces, and they behave differently:
- The storefront (your theme, product pages, collections). This is where a regular analytics script runs. A cookieless tracker here needs no consent banner in any market.
- The checkout (checkout pages, order confirmation). Shopify serves these separately from your theme, so a theme script never runs there. Checkout tracking must go through a Shopify web pixel, and Shopify applies its consent framework to web pixels in EU and UK markets.
Storefront: cookieless, no banner
On the storefront, MetriXs runs as an App Embed block, a regular script injected into your theme’s <head>. It is cookieless: no cookies, no localStorage, no personal data stored. Because no cookies are set, the ePrivacy consent requirement does not apply, so you need no consent banner on your storefront in any market, including the EU and UK.
You get visitors, pageviews, traffic sources, geography, and devices for every storefront visitor, everywhere. No data is lost to "reject all".
Checkout: web pixel, consent-gated in EU/UK
Shopify serves checkout pages separately from your storefront theme, so the App Embed script never runs there. To track checkout pageviews and commerce events (checkout started, payment submitted, order completed, revenue, line items), MetriXs uses a Shopify web pixel.
The pixel is cookieless, like the storefront tracker. But in EU and UK markets, Shopify applies its consent framework to every web pixel, regardless of the app’s own privacy settings. So Shopify shows a consent prompt at checkout, and only visitors who consent generate checkout events. Outside the EU and UK, the pixel fires for every visitor.
This is how Shopify enforces consent for checkout tracking across the platform, and it applies to every analytics pixel in the Shopify App Store. The honest way to describe it is: storefront is banner-free everywhere; checkout is consent-gated in EU/UK by Shopify.
What you measure, and where
| Surface | Cookieless | Banner needed | Markets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storefront (visitors, sources) | Yes | No | All |
| Checkout (revenue, funnel) | Yes | Shopify consent prompt in EU/UK | EU/UK: consenting only; rest of world: all |
Why this is still a strong privacy story
MetriXs sets no cookies anywhere, on the storefront or the checkout. The consent prompt at EU/UK checkout is part of Shopify’s framework, not because MetriXs sets cookies, and it actually helps keep checkout tracking GDPR-compliant in those markets. Outside the EU and UK, you get cookieless checkout tracking for every visitor.
For EU/UK merchants, the practical effect is that storefront traffic is complete and checkout commerce metrics reflect consenting visitors. That is the same trade-off every Shopify analytics pixel faces under the platform’s rules. The difference is MetriXs is honest about it and keeps the storefront fully cookieless everywhere.
How to install
- Install from the App Store. One click installs MetriXs on your store. It auto-verifies your domain and enables the checkout web pixel.
- Toggle the App Embed. In your theme editor, enable the "MetriXs Analytics" App Embed block. That injects the cookieless storefront script.
- Open your dashboard. Click through from Shopify (SSO, no password) and you see visitors, revenue, the conversion funnel, and top products.
No DNS setup, no theme editing, no developer needed. See the Shopify page for the full feature list and pricing.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I do Shopify analytics without cookies?
- Yes. On the storefront, MetriXs uses a cookieless App Embed script that needs no consent banner in any market. On the checkout, Shopify requires analytics to go through a web pixel, which is cookieless but consent-gated in the EU/UK by Shopify.
- Why does the checkout need a consent prompt in the EU?
- Because Shopify requires checkout tracking to go through its web pixel, and in EU and UK markets Shopify applies its consent framework to every web pixel. This is a platform requirement for all App Store pixels.
- Does MetriXs set cookies on Shopify?
- No. MetriXs never sets cookies on the visitor’s device, on the storefront or the checkout. Both tracking mechanisms are cookieless.
- Will I see revenue for every Shopify order?
- Outside the EU and UK, yes, the pixel fires for every visitor. In the EU and UK, checkout events reflect consenting visitors. Storefront traffic is tracked cookieless for everyone, everywhere.
- How is MetriXs installed on Shopify?
- One click from the Shopify App Store. MetriXs auto-verifies your domain, enables the checkout web pixel, and you toggle the App Embed block on in your theme editor.
